R.E.A.C.H
Elizabeth joined Ledbury Community Voluntary Action in January 2010 as part of a Lottery funded project to support voluntary and community groups across Ledbury and District. In her role as Community Development Worker she has been establishing which groups are in the area and what gaps there are. She now would like to know what sort of things people in the community might be struggling to achieve – do they want advice on setting up a new group, do they need more members for existing groups or new ways to raise funds, do they need advice on marketing themselves or simply another pair of hands to help make the tea?
Elizabeth has had experience of both being a volunteer and working with volunteers in the heritage industry, and is very aware of the benefits volunteering can bring, from learning new skills to having the satisfaction of contributing to your local community. It doesn’t have to take up all your waking hours – short bursts of focused activity can be just as useful as long-term commitment.
Ledbury Community Voluntary Action’s Community Group of the Month.
VIPs, Ledbury.
The VIPs are a support group who believe in getting out and about, doing interesting activities, having useful talks and making the most of their meetings on the first and third Thursday of each month. Why is this Ledbury CVA’s group of the month? Because it offers a great support service to those in the area with visual impairments and is run by dedicated volunteers. Patricia Wilkin became involved as its organiser in January 2009 and is very keen to see the group grow and flourish. If you would like to join, or recommend the group to a friend, please phone Patricia on 01531 633853. All a new member needs to provide is a optician or hospital note to state that they have a visual impairment. The club is open to adults of any age. A minibus is provided to collect members for the meetings, which are held at St Michael’s Flats in Ledbury. Indoor activities, talks, lunches out and trips to such places as Westons Cider factory and The Willow Trust canal boats are part of the programme, and members are encouraged to suggest other ideas too.
Membership costs £5 a year, plus £1 a visit to pay for refreshments and the room hire.
